This in-depth video by ‘Based on a True Story Podcast’ details many of the historical elements behind the Anthropoid movie.
There is a detailed biography of Reinhard Heydrich, the target of the mission. This covers his youth, naval career and ascent up the command of the SS as well as the Gestapo. It also explains many of Heydrich’s struggles and passions both as a child and adult.
The video then turns to the two Czech resistance fighters that would be assigned to the mission. First, it covers the details about how the two Czech agents were selected for Operation Anthropoid. The agents were selected from a group of Czech volunteer soldiers that had escaped to Britain. The selection process for the two ideal candidates was physically grueling and mentally testing. In the end, Jan Kubis and Josef Gabcik were selected for the mission as they were close friends who’s characteristics complimented each other. In addition, they had no ties to the city of Prague in which they would carry out the mission. This was extremely important to avoid being caught by the enemy.
Once selected, the two men finished the training and planning for the mission. Afterwards, Kubis and Gabcik flew from Britain to parachute into a wooded area outside of Prague. It is impossible to know the details about what happened next. The two soldiers were in the dark behind enemy lines. After weeks with no news about the mission, the allies considered it a failure. Eventually, the German news announced Heydrich’s death after an attack on his life. The show then explains the gruesome aftermath that ensued. The German response to the attack was ruthless.
